Amritsar, home to the Golden Temple, is famous the world over
as a holy city for the Sikh Community. In addition to being a spiritual hub,
Amritsar is also a cultural centre and an important tourist destination,
featuring prominently on the itineraries of both Indian as well as overseas
travellers. In fact, the Wagah border with Pakistan, which is a popular tourist
attraction, is just 40 kilometres from Amritsar. The city also has the
distinction of having the highest number of NRIs in India — and has its own
international airport, the Raja Sansi International Airport.
Amritsar ranks second in the country in terms of urbanisation, and has a very
high density of population. The city is also an important centre of business
and industry known for its technical skills and the ability to deliver quality
at par with global standards. The key industries include automobile parts,
sports goods, hand tools, rubber products, tannery products and surgical
instruments. Amritsar is also an important distribution centre for dry fruits.
Amritsar is well connected by road, rail and air, and has a distinct location
advantage with other important industrial centres located nearby - Jallandhar
(77 kilometres), Hoshiarpur (105 kilometres) and Ludhiana (140 kilometres). The
city is 234 kilometres away from Chandigarh, the state capital, and 464
kilometres from the Indian capital city of New Delhi.
